Great article Tom. This makes me think about flexibility. I have always prided myself on being flexible. This does not necessarily stand opposite resilience, but there is definitely some tension between the two. Probably a thought I need to dig into deeper for myself. I lately find that flexibility causes more internal tension, where resilience might bring about some calm around these things.
Tom- I like the line on "battling against the fixed and seeing what is possible."
Coenraad, When I first started reading, it brought to mind the old analogy about the big oak tree (neither flexible nor resilient) and the tall grass (resilient because it is flexible).
Tom, it occurs to me that Trust is common to all five of the practices for building resilience-
- Trust in ourselves,
- Trust in others,
- Trust in the wisdom of the universe
- Trust that we can endure because pain, bliss, boredom are all ephemeral and cyclical.
Such a great observation Coenraad! Thanks for reading! Excited to see what you find as you grapple with this, now you have me thinking about it!!!

I was just listening to Yo-Yo Ma talk about trust as so foundational to all things it transcends everything we do, such a great observation Shweta!
